The Jardin du Luxembourg

A haven of peace in the heart of France's capital

The history and beauty of the Jardin du Luxembourg

In the centre of Paris, the Jardin du Luxembourg dates back to the 17th century. It was created at the request of Marie de Médicis, widow of Henri IV, who was tired of the Louvre.

Designed by landscape architect Jacques Boyceau, the park is home to a wide variety of plants, flowers and trees, including magnolias, irises and cypresses.

Although it became a prison and then a German quarter during the wars, the Jardin du Luxembourg is now a popular meeting place for Parisians and tourists alike.

The Palais du Luxembourg houses the French Senate, as well as emblematic fountains, remarkable statues, a greenhouse and children's play areas.

A place of relaxation and culture for all

As well as its cultural attractions, the Jardin du Luxembourg offers a host of sports facilities, including tennis courts and basketball courts. Activities are organised throughout the year.

There are exhibitions, concerts and festivals. Peaceful corners with deckchairs offer visitors the perfect setting for meditation and reading.

To top it all off, the garden plays a crucial role in the urban ecology and biodiversity of Paris. It is home to a variety of plant and animal species and helps to preserve nature in the urban environment.
