A place out of time

The history of the Catacombs of Paris began at the end of the 18th century: to deal with public health problems linked to the spread of disease in the capital, the authorities decided to use the underground galleries of Paris to store the dead.

Over the years, many bones were transferred to the capital's basements. Today, the Catacombs are the largest ossuary in the world.

Some of the greatest figures in French history still reside in the Catacombs, including Racine, Rabelais, Montesquieu and Robespierre.
